Biodiesel is growing in popularity, especially since the recent rises in petroleum diesel. There are many enthusiasts already producing small quantities of biodiesel from used vegetable oils and animal fats. The quality of this fuel can vary substantially depending on how clean the used vegetable oil is prior to conversion to the esters (the biodiesel). Any foreign material present will cause wastage of reagents but can also pass through to the tank and clog up fuel injection systems.
This can be avoided simply by using micro-filtration. The most effective filtration system in removing the sub micron fines from the oil is the Frantz oil filter. By removing particles as small as 0.1 microns the oil not only appears visually clean but is analytically clean. This results in no wastage of reagents and maximizing conversion efficiency.
The typical set up is shown in the diagram below using a pressure pump to push the oil through the filter. If you want to use the low budget method you can use gravity feed but be patient as this will take quite a long time.
